The Story of Marrakech. Marrakesh or Marrakech is a most important city in the northwest African nation of Morocco. It is about a city surrounded by so much mystery, and many interesting facts that need to be known even if you haven’t ever been there. The weather there is balmy and sun-soaked all year long, except in summer when it starts to be really, really hot, so hot that it asks for you to be covered to be protected from the sun. Widely referred to as the ‘Red City’, Marrakech has two separate parts: the old city, or medina, and the modern city which, here, comprises the commercial quarter, Guéliz, and leafy residential district of boulevards known as l’Hivernage.
The well-known Djemma El Fna, the ancient square at the center of the city, is the main point of Marrakech and has been for centuries. During the day and, in particular, by night it is a real magnet for locals and tourists alike to be entertained by dancers, musicians and snake charmers, among others, and by purveyors of a huge variety of inexpensive street food. Must-see attractions in Marrakech consist of the Majorelle Gardens, the Dar si Said museum, the El Bahia and El Badi palaces, the Medersa Ben Youssef (Koranic School) and the Koutoubia mosque, the major marker of the city with its superior minaret.
